House Training Dogs

Puppy House Training Tips

House training a puppy is a responsibility that every serious dog owner needs to experience in order to bring up a well behaved dog. There are several approaches to house training. Each approach needs a significant amount of involvement by both the owner and pup as well.

To begin with, make sure to set your goals and expectations prior to going ahead with a training schedule. It is not an easy task to train puppies, and make sure you understand that there is no shortcut to the process either, no matter how skilful you are. Puppies need to adapt to a new environment, which takes time, as is the case with humans. Some breeds are known to be more intelligent others. However, you need to follow the basics irrespective of the breed you have. Puppies find it hard to control their bladders and bowel movement, which is why you need to be considerate and patient when house training your pup. You need to start by spending several days with your pet in order to be able to implement house rules.

Communicating with your Dog

Body language is important when it comes to recognizing any indicators that your pup needs to answer the call of nature. Typical puppy traits include sniffing the floor or walking around in circles. You can keep a newspaper handy during these times. Once your pup relieves himself on it you can carry it outside and then teach him to start relieving himself in that particular spot. He will soon learn that he needs to relieve himself outside and not inside your home.

Positive reinforcement always works when it comes to house training a pup. Reward them for good behaviour with a pat on the back or a small snack. This will soon make him realize that good behaviour is always appreciated, and can get fetch him a reward.

Establish a Feeding Schedule

House training entails a strict feeding schedule for your pup. When you are consistent with a feeding routine, you can predict when your pup needs to relieve himself. They normally do feel the urge about half an hour after eating. They will also need to be taken out as soon as they wake up. Planning trips to a designated area in your garden or bathroom will help your training program. Sometimes, puppies tend to urinate spontaneously due to excitement, or when afraid. It is important not to discipline a puppy for this since it is something beyond his control. However, this phase does not last beyond four months.

Bonding with your Pet

It is very important to spend as much time as necessary with a puppy. This will reinforce the training program you may have set. Ideally, family members who may be at home when you are not can make sure that your pup sticks to the pattern set. In this way, there is no room for error. Another thing to remember is when you take a pup out to do his business, do not end up playing with it until it has finished. This could only cause confusion and distracts the pup from answering nature’s call.

The bottom line is to make house training as enjoyable as possible so that your pup feels comfortable in his new surroundings are early as possible.
